Central Nigeria is home to Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, and contains the states of Niger, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nassarawa, Plateau and the Federal Capital Territory. The dominant religion in Nigeria’s central region is Christianity, however the middle belt of the country is known for being the home of a diverse collection of ethnic groups. The region is known not only for the federal capital but also for the meeting point of Rivers Niger and Benue. The region is also significant to African history as many slaves were freed here in the 1800s.
